Know Your Fiber: Human Hair

Posted by Tawni on

Hello Ladies! Today we are going to complete our hair fiber series with covering all things Human Hair. Let's get started!

You are scrolling through all the different styles and colors on our website and you have fallen in love with a human hair piece but you have so many questions. What does "Remy" mean? How do I care for a human hair hair piece? What is the difference between human hair and standard synthetic? How do I know if human hair is the right choice for me? Let me help you answer all those questions!

What are the benefits of choosing Human Hair?: Human hair is going to be the most customizable option in comparison to other hair fibers. Whether you want to be able to heat style your hair piece, or have it professionally colored, human hair is a great option! There are also lots of great styling products available for human hair that can change up your look as well. For example, Jon Renau In Tone Violet Shampoo allows you to customize your blonde human hair from a warm toned blonde to a more cool toned blonde from the comfort of your home with a simple wash! Are you loving those beach waves that are so popular right now? Check out Jon Renau Boho Beach Mist to give your human hair a nice textured wave without having to go to the beach. With so many customizing options, you can create a look as unique as you are!

Along with the customization factor, human hair is going to look very natural. The look and feel of human hair is undeniably gorgeous. The colors blend beautifully and the texture is so smooth and silky. The way the hair moves so naturally is hard to replicate in their synthetic sisters. Human hair will also have greater longevity so you can keep your beautiful hair with you anywhere from 1-2 years.

What are some important things to consider when looking at Human Hair?: Human hair has some clear benefits, but there are a few things you may want to think about before hitting "Add to Cart". Because human hair is so customizable and natural, it does require some up-keep to be sure the fibers stay looking their best! Unlike synthetic, the style is not "pre-set". This means when your hair needs a wash, it will require some styling time! Some of you reading may hear this and get excited for the endless possibilities human hair will bring. Maybe you love to do your hair every morning and the thought of having so many options makes you do a happy cheer! Others of you hear the words "styling" and the thought of needing to style your hair after each wash tires you. You like to style your hair but you want something simple for days when you just want to run out the door. Whatever end of the spectrum you land on is okay! Though it may take some time, human hair is still a worth while option!

What does the term "Remy" mean?: While you have been searching through human hair wigs you have seen the word "Remy" and "Non-Remy"; but what does the term "Remy" mean? Well, when human hair is collected it comes from multiple sources and is combined to create a hair piece. The term "Remy" is referring to the process the hair undergoes during the collection stage. Remy human hair is collected with the strands of hair all facing the same direction from root to tip. This process keeps the cuticles from tangling while the piece is worn. It also keeps the hair in the most natural state. Non-Remy human hair is also collected from multiple sources but the cuticle is removed so that the hair does not tangle. You will notice that Remy human hair will be more expensive than its counterparts due to the time it takes to collect and process the hair.

Why does human hair color look different than synthetic? You receive your brand new human hair wig and you bought it in your favorite synthetic shade. You open the box and instantly see a difference in color! What happened?

Human hair naturally has red and yellow undertones which is why you will notice it is warmer than synthetic. When human hair is collected it is typically brunette. In order to achieve a new color, the human hair undergoes a lightening process where it is lifted to the lightest level being a 613 which is a pale yellow. Then the hair is dyed to achieve the new color. Human hair also naturally has red and yellow undertones which will also attribute to the warmth.

Here are a few examples of synthetic fibers next to Human hair! You'll see the swatches on the left (synthetic) are overall cooler than the swatches on the right (human hair).

How do I care for Human Hair? You have made the leap and purchased a human hair wig! You open the box and it is exactly what you were hoping it to be. Now that you have decided this is a great fit, you've decide to start wearing and styling her. Here are some care tips and tricks from our Hair Care Team to help protect your investment!

1. After washing be sure to blow dry your human hair to keep the hair shiny and smooth for a polished look. Try using Jon Renau Blown Away Blow Dry Balm for UV protection and fly away control specially designed for alternative human hair!

2. De-tangle, de-tangle, de-tangle : Be sure to give you hair a good brush throughout the day to prevent excessive tangling and keep your hair looking fresh!

3. Try to wear smooth clothing to prevent excess tangling. Some clothing fibers, such as wool, can be rough on the human hair fibers and cause frizzing.

4. Is your hair looking dry? Try a deep conditioning treatment! This will give the hair a blast of moisture and make those fibers silky smooth.

5. If you are using styling tools, be sure to use a thermal spray to protect the fibers. Set styling tools below 350°F. Excessive heat can cause the hair to feel brittle and dry.

6. Be careful when brushing near the lace front or monofilament. Base materials are very delicate so gently brush with a paddle brush to prevent excess shedding.

7. When using product, be sure to avoid the base materials. Products, such as conditioner, can cause the knotting of the hair to loosen and cause excess shedding.

8. Be sure to use products formulated for Alternative Human Hair. Although Shampoo and Conditioner you can buy at your local salon or convenience store are also formulated for human hair, they are not formulated for alternative hair. Alternative human hair goes through an extensive process to achieve its desired color. Using hair products that are specifically made for alternative human hair will ensure you keep your investment looking its best.

I hope this blog series has helped answer lots of questions about the different hair fibers that are offered in the market today. Alternative hair has come a long way and there are so many options available!
